KU knew Gassnola was "their guy" - but didn't want any direct confirmation or a paper trail with how he got guys to KU.
When Preston wrecked his car, KU found the payments Gassnola approved for Preston's family when looking up Preston's financial accounting. After finding that direct evidence, KU could not play Preston any longer.
With De Sousa, KU never had that "confirmation" that he received any money from Gassnola. This gave them plausible deniability throughout the entire Adidas trial. They would not have had this plausible deniability had they played Preston after the car accident.

Not really - as soon as it came to light they launched an investigation and never played him. They actually didnt even have to do anything. That is the only silver lining in this and may help them with the NCAA.
The most damning thing to me is the taped convo with Kurtis Townsend and the Adidas rep talking about Zion. That convo alone could entice the NCAA to take some schollies away. [Reply]
Vick deserves to start. Im surprised Dotson is starting already. I thought the staff would make him work for it. Dotson has by far more potential at that position and hes super quick. I do like Moores game though. Hes quite a spark plug and looks like a scorer. [Reply]

I thought his mom was a stripper or escort or something and they couldn’t find a paper trail because of illegally earned income [Reply]

Why? Just because he was talking about doing something to get him here. It could have been finding the guy a job. That conversation didn't necessarily be about paying him cash [Reply]

I'll see if I can find an article - texts released between Preston and his mom during the trial seem to suggest otherwise. [Reply]

I was surprised by that too. It’s probably a good sign for us that Dotson is starting though. He has a very high upside, so he must also be catching on quickly.
The team looked super sloppy overall. The talent and depth is clearly there though. Once they figure out how to play as a team, they’ll be scary.
I think Doke will need to get used to playing with another big. He’s never really done that at Kansas, and he probably never played with another true big even in high school. [Reply]
What the fuck was their big men's deal with putting the ball on the floor. They just turn around they have a high percentage shot instead of dribble the ball once to gain no position. Lawson and his brother look crazy good. Mitch Lightfoot can windmill and 360 dunk which was weird. Warming up Lawson dunked one and his head was well above the rim. [Reply]

The spacing and communication was bad. I think that threw the big guys off their game. All very correctable.
My senior year at KU (2012), we looked awful against Fort Hays State. Withey got stripped like 5 times by small guys. I think Elijah Johnson, Tyshawn Taylor, and T Rob we’re out for that game. They eventually figured it out and made the Final Four.

Given how much of a liability Azubuike's free throw shooting was, I was certainly hoping that De Sousa could take over especially late in games, Not that I consider myself the greatest talent scout, but it sure looked to me like he had a huge upside. I was bummed when the scandal came to light. But if De Sousa is the only causality that KU faces, that would probably be getting off lightly. [Reply]

Dear lord. No, she was not a stripper. She was a floor manager at a swank Beverly Hills restaurant and the lack of a paper trail is due to most of her income being on tipouts which are cash-based and routinely under-reported to avoid taxes.
