If the returner has to run backwards to get the ball and then run forward, then he'll have no chance to gain any meaningful yards.
They changed the rule in 2018 so they could blow the play dead earlier and avoid unnecessary collisions. Same rules change banned the wedge as well. [Reply]

I'm guessing he is referring to plays where the ball lands in front of the returner, bounces into the end zone and they catch it on a hop [Reply]
