I think people need to come to grips with the probable bloodbath that comes from about picks 18 through 29. We're gonna have a lot of guys we like that come off the board.
We may be looking at a situation where the best in the respective groups are something like:
Shit man, at that point there IS no perfect answer. You have a dozen guys who you'd like to get at 50 and may not get at 64.
So if that happens, what's so bad about saying "Well shit, Worthy is greased lightning and that can be used immediately in this offense even if it takes him time to learn the full route tree...."
Nobody is saying trade up to 18 to make sure we can get someone like Worthy or Burton. They're saying that the board could well fall apart on us by the time we're up and in that event, if you're looking at 20 similarly situated prospects, why NOT put speed at the top of the traits you'd be looking for?
Would I rather have fast and smaller (Worthy) or slower and bigger (Let's say Coleman for the sake of reasonable discussion) -- gimme Worthy. A guy like Johnny Wilson isn't on my board at all because of that same thinking.
"Spending a 1" on speed may just end up being a necessary evil if it turns out that there's just not a ton left for us at 32. And if your answer is "We'll I'd rather trade a little speed for a little more size - I prefer 'Tez Walker..." well fine man, ain't anybody gonna argue that point. Because Walker's plenty fast in his own right and has better size than Worthy. There's plenty of room for reasoned disagreement there.
But if you're sitting there at 32 with the board I laid out, there's one guy on that board with a truly elite trait anywhere and it's Worthy's record speed. And if we took him at 1, I'd fully expect you to hate it.
Why? Well...I do not know. It's completely defensible to focus on finding an elite trait in the event you can't get a true blue chipper.
You're not wrong - but FUCK.
And yes, Walker would likely be my call there or trade back. [Reply]

Nah. Unless the guy is a all around solid WR *and* can run like a deer.
But miss me with these 5 foot nothing Hollywood Brown types.
That's why I love the Rice pick - has size, speed and is versatile AF. Not just a one trick pony.
At this point he kind of is. He's a zone beater. He hasn't shown he can consistently beat man coverage. Now, can he get there? Maybe but at this point he's very much more suited as a zone beater and yac guy than a legit deep threat and a guy who's going to beat man coverage. [Reply]

He's got the slant and back-shoulder fade in his man-beating tool kit right now. Same as what JuJu had in '22. He can definitely add to that list as he goes but even with just that, it's a very useful player that will have no problem cranking out 1K yard seasons. [Reply]

Every year I do a couple drafts where I shade things a bit towards kicking us in the dick.
That board was the result. It didn't require anything too nutty; I took Franklin at 29 I think. Mitchell went around 24. I should've saved it. But I didn't go hunting things that would suck - I just broke ties with things that would suck.
And it was frighteningly easy to build the board exactly as I laid out at 32.
Bottom line w/r/t a trade-down, though, is that to hear Veach tell it, they tried to trade up AND down last year and got not takers. Maybe a couple extra okay QB prospects like Nix and Pennix would have more teams willing to move into 32 to get the 5th year option this year (weren't any of those kinds of guys last year).
I've said all along, I'd try to force a TON of capital into the 40-70 range because I think that's a sweet spot. But if there aren't takers, there aren't takers. [Reply]

I’d like to get Curtis Samuel and bringing back Hardman. Watson/Hardman are your reserves while Rice/Samuel are the starters.
Don’t think any of the top 5 WR’s are gonna be an option, ever with a trade up. I do wonder if a LT like Morgan would be in reach.
Veach is trading up though. He tried and failed last year. Don’t think that’s a question this year. [Reply]
