Media Center>Time again for a new phone
Dartgod 08:28 PM 07-14-2013
So I'm eligible to upgrade my cell phone again August 1st. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S2 through Sprint and was ready to get the S4. Now I see that LG is set to release their Optimus G2 sometime in August.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/09/lg-optimus-g2-leak/

I've never considered LG, but I'm intrigued by what I've read.

Has anyone else looked at this and is it worth waiting another month or so for the LG?

Also, does anyone in the KC area have any experience with Sprint's LTE 4G? Is coverage still spotty?

Another phone to look at is the Oppo Find 7, which also comes with a removable battery. Not sure how much support you would get if you bought one in the US, though. But there is a model that specifically supports US LTE.

Anyone know the size difference between HTC ONE and S5? Anything bigger than S3 is a deal breaker.

Galaxy S3 = 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 in
Galaxy S4 = 5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 in
Galaxy S5 = 5.59 x 2.85 x 0.32 in
HTC One (M8) = 5.76 x 2.78 x 0.37 in

Less than half an inch taller and virtually identical width and depth.

So basically S3 size (except slightly taller for the HTC One)

The HTC One M8 is probably the biggest 5" phone on the market. This is because it has the 2 speakers on the front and then they still have that terribly useless htc logo on the front that does not a damn thing. If it weren't for the "OOOOOOOOOO Shiny!" feeling people get from the metal body a lot more people would be bitching about the size compared to the other phones with the same size screen.

Even Sony, who have some of the biggest bezels in the industry, managed to fit their 5.2" Z2 in the same body size as the M8.

I'd have to give that purchase a 0/10.

Great phone, great price, but that model doesn't support US frequencies.

I just don't see the purpose of spending that much money on a phone to be stuck in the world of 3G. If I'm spending that much coin on a phone I want to be able to use the best currently available, otherwise I'd save the money and get a Moto G or something.

Read the "item specifics" and the model number, bud. That is the N9000. The N9005 is the model that supports US frequencies.

In the description he puts carrier Verizon. Verizon phones are unlocked. So either A: he doesn't know what he's talking about and just pulled some template eBay unlocked bullshit or B: he's lying. I'm gonna go with A

Maybe, but considering 99% of what that user sells is phones and that on ebay.ca there's this...

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Mint-Samsung-...-/281289865723

That item description of theirs looks awfully familiar. Except this time they actually use a SM-9005 template.

I'd find it hard to believe that they just pulled some random eBay template

I wouldn't go that far. There's far more apps on Android IMO. Of course, there's more shit too.

And there's a metric ton of apps on iOS that are free, although the best apps are usually pay (or IAP).

I like the idea but in reality I have never found myself needing it.
Since almost every phone now has a reset sequence, there's really no reason for a removable battery anymore. Back in the old days, having a removable battery was almost required.

I've got a Nexus 7 and an assortment of iOS things around, and find the Android world to be full of a whole bunch of crap. Outside those large apps that are on both platforms (Pocket, Tumblr, FlipBoard) I struggle to find apps that are of the quality and finish that's on iOS. Apps that I use all the time with no real android equal?

- Editorial
- OmniFocus
- Reeder
- Drafts
- Chunky Comic Reader
- Day One

To say nothing about the games that are amazing that don't do IAP or ads:

- Monument
- Device 6
- Threes
- Letterpress

Conversely, I have yet to find something in the Android world that there is no equal or superior app on iOS.
