Women's tourney isn't the cash cow for the chosen tournament site, and spreading the tourney out to neutral sites doesn't grow the brand like the Men's tourney.
The format of the men's tourney has nothing to do with promoting upsets. It's about putting the game in the most lucrative setting possible. [Reply]

Actually, it does have to do with promoting upsets. That is what helps to build the $$$ better than anything else. [Reply]

If you have a team that is built around 3-point shooting, the results are going to be more fluky.
But I think this is Self's weakest team. Doke is a bad free throw shooter even by the standards of big men who can't shoot free throws. Lightfoot is fine off the bench, but then there is nobody.
Devonte is a stud, and it is impressive that he can play so many 40 minute games without foul trouble being an issue. But off the top of my head, I can't think of any other Self teams that I wouldn't take. Sure on a good 3-point shooting night, they can out-shoot anybody. But that is a weak approach if you expect to win night after night instead of just getting the occasional upset.
But a really down year for a Self team is still ranked around 10th in the country and still has a legitimate (if uphill) shot at winning the Big 12. Kansas fans have had it really good. Just wish they could have gotten number 14 before having a down year. Wonder what their record would be if Preston had never been suspended. [Reply]
