Mozeliak, talking trade strategy on KMOX: "If you're trading away 2-3 prospects that have a combined 18 years of control... for one [year]? That doesn't sit well with me."
More Mozeliak (KMOX) on trading for a player with one year of control: "For us, it's all about trying to find that right balance between what works for us and what we're willing to give up. But we're in this for the long haul. We're going to continue to invest in our pipeline."
2-3 prospects worth more than potentially 1 year from a future HoFer.
It's not like you have Ozuna locked up for a 5 year run here, Mo. I like the strategy.
I'm okay with that approach in this case because I dont think we can sign him even at $400 million that we have to spend. As DJ pointed out, we might be seeing a shift in these top players only playing for the coast teams.
Reyes, Kelly and a comp pick for one year? No thanks. We are not that desperate to win a title this year and give up on the next 4 years. [Reply]

I dont think they would have to give up Kelly, if only for the reason that the Orioles likely dont want him, their #1 prospect is a catcher that they called up last season.
I would give up Reyes in a heartbeat though. You are holding onto this belief that he is going to be a guaranteed ace or something. He's already blown up his arm and his command issues might land him in the bullpen his entire career. Plus, Reyes wont be getting any significant starting time til hes basically in his arbitration years.
As it sits are the Cardinals going to be contending for the division by just adding Ozuna? They only have him under contract for 2 years and unless he fires Boras they aren't re-signing him before he hits the market.
So if your belief is that the Cardinals wont be able to sign any star bats, what are they going to add in FA for the final year that Ozuna is with the Cardinals to win a WS?
Guess you better hope they get something done with the Rays that costs their entire farm system. [Reply]

I know we still need a serious bat to compete. I'm
Just not all in for 2018. We could possibly get rid of Matheny in the off season. There is a ton of bats becoming available in the offseason next year. Save our prospects for next year instead of blowing them for a one year run. [Reply]

There arent a ton of bats in FA next year. There's a few decent top of the order bats like like Pollock and Blackmon, but for middle of the order you are looking at Harper and Machado and then Donaldson and MAYBE Adam Jones. The rest are has beens or players that you dont want out on the field like Nelson Cruz. I could see potentially going after Daniel Murphy but are you going to give up on Wong? [Reply]
Source confirms report from @CraigMish: #Marlins’ Realmuto wants to be traded. Elite catcher under three years of control likely would bring back significant value.

Like they'll even need one now. Seriously, they should change the franchise name to the Fire Sales. The logo could be a charred ember smoking on an empty field. [Reply]

Would you take a .270, .345 OBP, 30 hr, 85 rbi guy at 3b next year that costs you 5 million a year?
That is what a full year of Jedd projects based on last year.
Fowler
Carpenter
Pham
Ozuna
Gyorko
DeJong
Molina
Wong
That is stacked at the top with OBP guys that also have some pop, followed by some guys who have power to drive them in. I would rather start the season with that lineup than overpay for Longoria. [Reply]

Gotta upgrade the three hole. That not cutting it. [Reply]
sources: cubs are indeed meeting with yu. they have cast a wide net on free-agent/trade markets for a top starting pitcher. cobb, lynn, arrieta, duffy, archer among other possibilities. https://t.co/enuahpAKTm
