The defense isn't designed for the DE to cover the RB, its just how the chess game worked out. The LB were running a stunt and the Chargers happened to be running a RB flat route and so someone had to cover him.

Nothing wrong with this... other teams drop their DE's in coverage all the time. It works unless you SHOW THE FUCKING CROSS BLITZ with 10 seconds on the play clock...
