Nzoner's Game Room>What's your Chiefs Mount Rushmore look like?
Bl00dyBizkitz 05:48 PM 06-24-2024
NFL Throwback just dropped a pretty neat video putting together every team's Mount Rushmore.

Here's what they put for the Chiefs, in no particular order.

1. Derrick Thomas
2. Tony Gonzalez
3. Travis Kelce
4. Patrick Mahomes

Thoughts? What would you change, if any?

EDIT - Forgot about the Honorable Mentions.
Len Dawson
Bobby Bell
Willie Lanier
Will Shields
Buck Buchanan
Johnny Robinson
Emmitt Thomas

Because DT had more sacks in one game than Jones has in all his playoff games combined?

Actually, I don't think that's true anymore. I hope not. He's had 3 really good super bowls.

I don't think there's ever been a speed rusher better than DT. He could beat the biggest and most mobile tackles.

He had 6.5 sacks.

I mean, I think those are tackles?

I love Jones, but 2.5 sacks in 19 playoff games isn't exactly Rushmore material

Tackles on QB for loss.

And part of that was Marty's insane idea of pulling DT to put more size on the field vs. teams like Buffalo who they thought were going to run the ball.

Weird. Sites vary, crediting him with as few as zero tackles, or as many as 10 tackles in 10 playoff games. Either way, not good.

It's hard to make the tackle when you lead the league in double teams.

The other factor that boosts Derrick Thomas is the fact that we had a 25 to 30 year period where he was our biggest star by far. Between 1975 and 2000, who was the second biggest star on the Chiefs?

And just to avoid confusion, I'm not saying he was on the team from 1975 to 2000. I'm just saying that there was nobody in that time period who was even close to him in terms of star power.

Mahomes and Reid are quickly approaching GOAT conversation for their respective positions. Kelce is likely already there. How many other franchises have 3+ players/coaches you could legitimately claim as top 2-3 all-time at their positions?

Chiefs:
Kelce, Mahomes, Reid

Ravens:
Lewis, Reed, Ogden

49ers:
Rice, Montana, Sanders, Lott, Owens

Patriots:
Belichick, Brady, Gronk

Bears:
Payton, Butkus, Singletary, Hester (return specialist)

Steelers, Packers, Cowboys, Giants have a storied history, not certain they have 3+ players in GOAT conversation at their respective position though.
Sanders shouldn’t qualify for your 9ers Rushmore. He was only there for one year.

Who would you put in front of DT on the MT Rushmore? Obviously Mahomes, Kelce, Dawson, and Buchanan based on your list. Anyone else?

Don Hutson is getting snubbed on the Packer lists.

Food for thought, Tony Gonzalez (No. 45), Willie Lanier (No. 53) and Bobby Bell (No. 69) were all highly rated on NFL Network's The Top 100: NFL's Greatest Players released in 2010.

All three also made the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2015.
